Statistics
- In February, 2019, Lexington announced a push to increase the diversity of its volunteer boards and commissions through a public education and awareness campaign encouraging more citizens to get involved.
- This effort will include a new diversity statement, now on the City’s website. It establishes diversity as a goal for board and commission membership. Diverse board membership encourages the exchange of different perspectives and supports social equity in communities.
- A 2019 survey of current board members will also be conducted. The survey will ensure improvements in diversity over time can be measured.
- In preparation for this event, CivicLex conducted a random sample analysis of 6 Boards and Commissions, and found that the results were overwhelmingly white and majority male.
Facilitator Questions asked in this session:
- How do municipal boards and commissions shape our community?
- What voices are represented on these Boards and Commissions?
- What voices are not represented on these Boards and Commissions? Why?
- Are there barriers to being on a Board or Commission?
- How can we restructure the city to have more inclusive Boards and Commissions?
